Interlude (Nephrite; Kunzite PG-13)

Sequel to The Green Fairy. Set just before Power Play.

Interlude

Past the point of trying, I'm a dying breed.
Thank her for reminding me of all the things I've done completely wrong.

The hotel corridor was so quiet that it felt as if they were walking through a cemetery. Nephrite wanted to lie down and go to sleep there but Kunzite wouldn't let him. He opened the door to their room and Nephrite felt everybody follow them inside. He stumbled towards the bed and collapsed into its forgiving embrace. But the moment he closed his eyes, he saw Jupiter's face, so he had to open them again.

Venus sat beside him. She reached out and brushed damp hair off his forehead. He wondered why she was being so nice to him when he was so obviously in the way. "You need to get some rest."

"Can't," he muttered. "I see her..."

Venus looked away for a moment, unable to speak. He saw her throat convulse as she swallowed, and then someone laid down beside him.

"Go to sleep," said Zoisite, his back solid and comfortable. "I'll keep the nightmares away."

Even if Zoisite were only doing this to stop Kunzite being angry with him, Nephrite appreciated the gesture. He closed his eyes and felt his body finally relax. The last thing he remembered was the soft touch of Venus's hand on his forehead.

Venus waited until she was sure that Nephrite was asleep. Then she stood up and glared at Jadeite, as Zoisite had gone to sleep the moment he put his head down, like a cat. "Absinthe. Of all the drinks you could have chosen..."

"Oh, don't you start!" Jadeite hunched his shoulders and glared back, having sobered up a while ago. "I already feel guilty enough about having made him see that bitch again, and Kunzite will probably hold this over my head for the next hundred years, thank you very much!"

Venus rolled her eyes and walked past him as if he hadn't said anything. "Well, goodnight, gentlemen. It's been... memorable." She glanced over her shoulder at Kunzite, but he shook his head once. She hadn't really expected him to follow her after this evening's events, but all the same, it was a disappointment. She bowed her head and walked out of the door.

"You're letting her go?!" Jadeite asked, looking from the empty doorway to his leader and back again.

"I'm hardly going to leave Nephrite alone after what just happened, am I?" Kunzite responded, his voice sharp as glass.

Jadeite pointed at him. "Oh no. I learned my lesson from last time, you two need to work out your kinks or the atmosphere becomes unbeareable. I still don't know which was worse, the way you were mentally undressing her with your eyes in full view of the Pope or the 'please fuck me now' body language she kept giving you on the visit to the monastery. Either way, you are getting laid tonight for the sake of everybody else's sanity."

"You're asking me to have sex in order to help other people?" Kunzite said, raising an eyebrow.

"Well, I know you won't do it for your own pleasure, you're too goddamn noble!" Jadeite snapped. "I'll stay up and make sure they're okay if that's what's bothering you, I don't feel like sleeping any way."

"You're too kind."

"Well, maybe I just want you to be happy for once, you depressive mess!"

It was a mark of how deeply Nephrite and Zoisite slept that neither one of them even stirred at this declaration. Kunzite stared at Jadeite, who blinked, realising what he'd just said out loud.

"Of course, I am very drunk at this moment in time," he said in a calm voice, as if he hadn't just yelled something at the top of his lungs. "And if you happen to bring this up again, I will deny all knowledge and memory of what I just said."

Kunzite nodded, resisting the urge to smile. "I have no idea what you're talking about."

"Excellent. Well, I'll see you in the morning. I'd say 'sleep well' but I don't think you'll be doing much sleeping."

Kunzite bent over Nephrite to check him one last time. The younger man breathed easily. He did not dream. Satisifed, Kunzite straightened and walked to the door. Before leaving, he paused.

"Thank you, Jadeite."

"Just get out of here before I change my mind," Jadeite grumbled, settling down in an armchair with his battered old copy of The Art of War. Kunzite smiled to himself and slipped out into the hallway, his heart already thumping in anticipation of his reception
