Originally posted by [livejournal.com profile] heeroluva at "Suspicious comments" and "Spam comments": LJ decision to 'block' spam is a big FAIL!
So I've been noticing in both my own journal and communities that I haven't been able to see some comments even thought it says there are more comments there than are actually showing up. Instead I'm getting a place holder that says (Spam comment) or (Suspicious comment).

Why are these showing up like this you may ask? In their rush to fight spam LJ has created a new filter that're AUTOMATICALLY TURNED ON in ALL journals and communities, which screens comments that are made with 'suspicious links' ie links that are not on their safe whitelist, so pretty much the majority of the internet. There is no noted way to add to the 'whitelist'.

What really gets me is that they didn't inform people that they were doing this until a week after it was done and that it was automatically turned on.

So how do I turn it off you might ask.

That's simple. Go to your Settings, click on the Privacy tab, and half way down where it says Spam Protection uncheck the box next to "Comments containing a link to a non-whitelisted domain will be marked as spam and moved to a special section." This applies to both personal journal and communities and the opinion has to be manually changed in each one.

While I understand how this could be a good idea, I think they went about it in a very backhanded way, and have implemented it poorly. There was no message to anyone that the link has been screened. It's automatically done. This went on for over a week before they said anything about it. There is still nothing in the FAQs about it even. The only way I found out about this way going through the support pages where people were reporting similar issues.

Please share this!

ETA: This links really illustrates the problems.

The good news: my bathroom is finally done. I can actually take a shower in my own home again.

The bad news: the bath and sink have NOT been collected and now my old toilet is there as well, because the plumber did NOT take it with him like he said he would.

New York picspam this weekend.

1. WTF is John Sargeant still doing on Strictly Come Dancing? STOP VOTING FOR HIM! You want to vote for a mature dancer, vote for Cherie Lunghi! SHE'S got talent.

2. Alesha Dixon was so amazing on Something for the Weekend.

3. I think I may be developing a cold. I have the scratchy feeling in my throat, my nose feels hot and runny, my body temperature (which is always the first thing to be affected) is completely out of whack. I have that usual sense of my body separating and turning into fragile parts instead of a strong whole. Urgh. Lemsip ahoy.

Oh dear God. They are making a movie of The Little White Horse. Except it's not called that, it's called The Secret of Moonacre.

This rant will mean nothing to you if you have not read the book )

I have to preface this by saying that I watch The Tudors mainly because it makes me laugh inside: it is history as written by Jackie Collins and usually, I'm okay with that. Usually, it doesn't try to be serious and it gets away with it becuase the actors are pretty and some of them (Natalie Dormer, James Frain) are even good at what they do. But I just watched the seventh episode and I have to have a little rant about some of the things I saw.

Warning, long rant ahead )

I know that The Tudors is not meant to be taken seriously, I know that. But I can't forgive basic mistakes like that, I just can't.

Everybody has their programme that they watch because they need to switch off their brains. For me, it's America's Next Top Model (or Britain's, or Australia's, whatever). I'm keeping up with the latest series (the eighth) by YouTube. This is great because it means that I have absolutely no idea who is going to win. Any American series shown over here, I can go on YouTube and find out who won, but this time, I'm in the same boat as everyone else.

However, I am finding one particular person on this series really, REALLY irritating. Renée. I have never heard a person complain and whine so much in my life and I went to an all-girls' school. Now, I never thought I'd find anyone more irritating than Jade from Cycle 6, but Renée is worse. If anyone, ANYONE, does better than her (which is every episode), she immediately puts them down (which reminds me a lot of Jade). When she was saying that stuff about how Jaslene had the 'edgier' shoots and "if I had looks like hers, I could rock it, too" I wanted to yell at the screen.

SHUT UP! If you can't do it, Renée, that's your problem! It's not a question of looks, it's a question of ability. Jaslene has more ability than you in front of the camera and that's just the way it is. Stop complaining and start working on yourself! I seriously can't wait until Tyra does a one-to-one session with the girls and finds out just how horrible you are. Okay, so Brittany can fish for sympathy, but she's also a genuinely nice person and you know that she's better than you. That's exactly why you tried to tell her to sit out the challenge, so there would be one less competitor for you. The fact is that you can't stand that all these girls are overshadowing you.

The look on Renée's face when Tyra said there were no negative critiques on Brittany's photo... envy personified. Having said all that, she is right about the challenges with her "I'll win the war" strategy. Yaya from Cycle 3, Jade and Nnenna from Cycle 6 all won a lot of challenges but none of them ended up winning the actual competition. However, you need to stand out to win the competition and Renée's critiques can basically be summed up as "Good, but could do better". Unlike Jaslene, Brittany and Jael, who have all come in for serious praise. Right now, I'm hoping for one of those three to win. Or maybe Whitney. Diana siding with Renée has put me right off - plus, it's no good having all those curves if you don't know what to do with them. I seriously pray every episode that Renée will get cut, just because she is so negative.

Phew! That was building up for a while.

Anyone who supports this pairing should walk (click) away now. This is my own private LJ and I am not going to hold back.

For those who don't know, Sparrabeth is the fandom name for the pairing of Jack Sparrow and Elizabeth Swann in the Pirates of the Caribbean series. It wouldn't surprise me if people used their surnames as a reason to put them together.

Okay, so this pairing has been bugging me for a while now, but the proverbial straw has finally broken the proverbial camel's back (poor camel) and now I have to rant. This rant was prompted by a video I found on YouTube, one of a series where the director took a song she found in a Willabeth video (God knows where, there are hardly any on YouTube) and put it in a Sparrabeth one instead. She used Holding Out For A Hero, remarking that it's always Jack coming to Elizabeth's rescue, not Will.

Um, since WHEN?! The only time I can think of Jack coming to Elizabeth's rescue is right at the beginning of Curse of the Black Pearl and that is not "My God, Elizabeth is in danger, I must save her!", that is "Oh, random girl falling into the water, I think I'd better check on her." Will didn't rescue her because he didn't even know she was in danger. The whole point of that scene (apart from the medallion calling to the Black Pearl) was to show that Norrington was completely oblivious to the woman he loved falling to her death, which meant he automatically failed 'Hero 101' and was shown as unsuitable for the heroine of the film. Will spends half of the first film attempting to rescue Elizabeth from the pirates (Jack just goes along because he wants his ship) and he succeeds. Then she rescues him, because this film is made in the 21st century and I like that. But please don't give me crap about Jack always coming to Elizabeth's rescue. She either does that herself or Will does it for her when she's tied up. Jack never even thinks about it.

Jack is not interested in Elizabeth. Sure, she's a pretty girl, fiesty, different, she's intriguing. But Jack got slapped by three different women in the first film, which is a record, I think, and should tell you everything you need to know about how he treats them. He actually hit on Elizabeth when they were marooned (yeah, the alcohol played a part, but it wasn't that big) and she was perfectly immune to him, then, so what's changed?! Jack loves his freedom above all else. Jack loves the Pearl above all else. Elizabeth just loves the idea of freedom that Jack represents. Sure, he seems attractive now, when she's about to be tied down in marriage, but I can't see them making a go of it, can you? I suppose for me it boils down to the fact that Will is an honest worker. Even as a pirate on Davy Jones's ship, he works hard. He always tries, he does his best. He deserves some goddamn reward for that.

So yes. I sincerely hope that Will does get his girl at the end of World's End. Politically incorrect or not.
