May Madness Part One

I went to see Iron Man 3 on Saturday May 4th with my friend R, who is studying in London for her PhD. I took her to Ed's Easy Diner because she was missing root beer and she complimented the chilli con carne. Unfortunately, we missed the Thor 2 trailer because of severe delays on the Central Line. The ushers kept telling us we hadn't missed the film, but that wasn't why we were rushing! At least we saw the Man of Steel trailer. I enjoyed the movie a lot (I always like it when Tony is stripped of his trappings and shows just how smart and resourceful he is). I was pleased with the increased focus on Rhodey, wish there had been more Pepper, loved every scene that Ben Kingsley was in, and was disappointed that Maya and Pepper did not team up to be snarky badasses on the run. Ending credits scene was perfect, well done, Marvel.

Sunday May 5th and Bank Holiday Monday were spent with my sister at her flat in Bristol. The weather was beautiful and we had a barbecue on the hill outside her house on Sunday afternoon. I was able to meet her cat properly for the first time and we finally watched Rise of the Guardians together. (This also turned out to be the last time as they had to put the cat to sleep at the beginning of June. ;_; ). On Monday morning, we went to Rocotillos for only the second time since I've been living in Gloucester (six years) and I had a butterscotch milkshake with the Breakfast Club meal (bacon, fried egg, sausage and toast all for £3.95).

Tuesday, I went to the Guildhall with Lorna and saw Cloud Atlas. Some of the storylines were interesting, some were not, and the digital make up they used to make the Caucasian actors look Asian was discomforting and smacked of latent racism to me. I would recommend it for rental.

Wednesday, I went to see Matthew Bourne's Sleeping Beauty with Mum and Helen at the Bristol Hippodrome. It was funny and beautiful and tragic, but we had to leave before the end because I had to catch the last train back to Gloucester. I can't wait to pass my test so I can drive myself about.

Re: Cloud Atlas

I LOVE THAT MOVIE. The yellow-face was... weird, but honestly, I don't have any better solutions considering what they were trying to do. If I did, I would feel like I would have more of a right to get up in arms about it. All you can really do is acknowledge it as problematic, say "Well, nice try, Wachowski's. I see what you were going for there. Not sure if you went the best way about it, but I can see you TRIED to be fair. Didn't exactly succeed, but points for effort? Maybe?" and then move on. Because, yeah, there are white people in yellow-face, but there are also black people in yellow-face, Halle Berry played a white, Jewish woman, Susan Sarandon and Halle Berry were both men at one point (Halle an asian man), both Ben Wishaw and Hugo Weaving played women, and Doona Bae was, at different points, a white British lady and a hispanic. And considering the point they were trying to get across, I totally get what they were trying to do. That said, I don't think we've come far enough as a society for them to get away with it.

That said, I might be slightly biased considering my deep love and respect for Lana Wachowski. (And her awesome magenta dreadlocks. If only I could pull those off half as well.)

ALSO, that score was amazing. I love the Hell out of the "Cloud Atlas Sextet". I play it all the damn time.

When is that driving test, anyway?

(In other news, guess who has tickets to see Arthur Darvill in "Once" this weekend? Whee!)

I see what you're saying and I do agree that they did the best they could do. But I don't think we're advanced enough to really be comfortable with it.

Driving test is next Thursday. I hope you enjoy Once. :) I saw Arthur in Dr Faustus at Shakespeare's Globe where there was a bit of singing at the end and he's amazing.

Oh my GOD, his singing is AMAZING. And I was right near the front, so he was within 20 feet of me at all times. Why does he not have an album out? I would TOTALLY buy it.

Edit Forgot to mention, but I did totally hang out at the back stage door after the show. Had a nice conversation with Joanna Christie. (She is super sweet!) The cast that came out, in general, was super nice, but alas, Arthur did not want to come out to play that afternoon. Sadly.

He did do a LP with a band he helped form called 'Edmund', I'm sure it's floating about on the internet. :) Sorry that you didn't get to meet him in person but it's always fun to talk to the cast!
